So is Rice our best young Centre Back now?
Seems to have overtaken Burke and Oxford.

Chances are he will be shipped out on loan. But he is a leader and with Quina have that bit of extra class IMO.

Yesterday Fonte was caught out flat footed and their player was set for a tap into an empty net. Suddenly Rice swooped in from nowhere to make an exceptional last ditch clearance. Already rescuing more experienced defenders.

He seems to have impressed, I think his age means he won't go out on loan, they will probably see his development best served at the club for this season, whereas at 20/21 the likes of Burke and Cullen 'should' be pushing for a first team berth, and if they aren't then it'll be more beneficial to them to get regular game time at a slightly lower level.

Re: So is Rice our best young Centre Back now?
I am hoping he gets a chance early season in the defensive midfield role and seizes with both hands ( or feet :- ) ) because I have zero faith in Noble or Kouyate over the season to be of the quality needed ( pace and technique for Kouyate).

Martinez might be the best option up front to pair with Hernandez or come on for him in games as I can see Sakho breaking down in less than 3 games. Back injuries are the worst and often prematurely end careers.

I assume the above because the noises / messages coming out of the club seem to be that our serious business is done and a net spend under 20 million suits all concerned :-(

Re: So is Rice our best young Centre Back now?
I would imagine that Rice might stand a chance of the odd sub appearance, he can play CB and DM, and probably isn't chomping on the bit to play as regularly as Cullen and Burke, hence why at their age they have been loaned out for regular football at a good level. Rice was made Captain of the u23s last season so at his age it might be good for him to stay here and play for the development team.

Unlikely to get a chance unless ginge goes. Burke I get but Cullen could have offered cover for injuries, unless they are bringing in someone?

With Burke being shipped out on loan it seems my suspicions that Rice has gone above him in the pecking order have been confirmed.

"Seems to have overtaken Burke and Oxford."

Yes, Rice is our best young CB, despite never playing in the Prem, unlike Burke & Oxford.

Swiss.

It's because of people like Claret&Hugh who write articles like this which basically suggests that we should be starting these kids based on the 2 pre-season games he watched on TV.

http://www.claretandhugh.info/these-kids-are-ready-slav-future-looks-fantastic/

I'd love to see more kids given a chance but they are always involved in pre-season so this is nothing new.

Great that they are doing well but it doesn't mean they are ready to play Vs Man Utd at Old Trafford in the Premier League does it?

I would love nothing more than seeing our youngsters climb through the ranks and play for the first team but we're been here so many times let's not get carried away.

Why do people make so much judgement on pre-season friendlies is beyond me.

I remember Titi Camara banging them in pre-season and then..........
